As Mud Australia prepares to open its highly anticipated new store in the heart of Islington, London this October, we sat down with founder Shelley Simpson to explore the story behind the brand. From its origins in 1994 to becoming a globally recognised name in handmade porcelain, Shelley shares the inspiration behind Mud Australia’s elegant designs, her dedication to sustainability, and the exciting future for the brand.

As the new store at 152 Upper Street, Islington, London approaches its grand opening, discover the passion, craftsmanship, and creativity that make Mud Australia a household name around the world.

  1. Origins of Mud Australia: Can you share what inspired you to start Mud Australia? Where did your passion for ceramics come from?

It was an accident. A happy one! A housemate encouraged me to have a go at her kick wheel on a summer day and I fell in love. I always feel so calm working with clay.

  2. Design Philosophy: How would you describe the design philosophy of Mud Australia?

Everything I design starts with something I need in my home. It must be practical and easy to live with - all of our pieces can move seamlessly from oven to table to dishwasher. While our silhouettes are quite striking and sculptural on their own, they can easily blend in to any interior.

  3. Craft and Community: You mention a commitment to craft and community. Could you elaborate on how these values are integrated into Mud Australia?

People are at the core of everything we do at Mud. I am passionate about creating a warm and comfortable environment for my team. We’re still a small business but try our best to have engaging community activities where we can connect outside of work. This extends to the communities around our stores and studio and our customers too.

  4. Environmental Goals and Sustainability Practices: Mud Australia is climate neutral certified through South Pole since 2020. What motivated this decision, and what are some key sustainability practices your company has implemented?

In Australia, the effects of the climate crisis are loud and hard to ignore. In 2019 we had a summer with terrible bushfires that took many homes and lives. After a strong feeling of helplessness, we decided to take action. We focus on reducing our emissions, eradicating waste and social sustainability.

  5. Global Presence: As Mud Australia expands globally, and ahead of the new London store opening, tell us about the design aesthetic and feeling people can expect in your stores?

We have worked with Melbourne-based architecture firm Design Office to create a unique store experience. When customers enter our spaces, the product is displayed on the walls using Vitsoe shelving, much like a gallery. We use domestic furniture and a calming colour palette so that customers can imagine the pieces within their own homes. Our team is welcoming and well-versed in helping you put together your own special collection of Mud.

  6. Personal Favourites: From your extensive range of products, do you have any personal favourites or pieces that hold special significance to you?

This is always changing and I truly have no favourites. My favourite colours of the season are Yellow and Blossom (a soft pink). They're both such versatile neutrals.

  7. Future Aspirations: With the upcoming opening of your London store, what are your aspirations for Mud Australia in the UK and globally in the next few years?

Continue making to the best practice and looking after the needs of our team globally, whatever form that may come in!

  8. Inspiring Future Ceramicists: The Shelley Simpson Ceramics Prize represents a significant commitment to nurturing new talent in the ceramics community. Can you tell us more about the initiative and what inspired you to establish this prize?

The Shelley Simpson Ceramics Prize was launched in 2020 to support emerging talent in the ceramics community. Funded by Mud Australia, this annual $10,000 prize is awarded to an outstanding ceramics student to help fund their final year of studies. It's all about fostering the next generation of Australian ceramicists and encouraging innovation in the field.

The visual arts are essential to our culture and well-being, yet they remain underfunded. I wanted to help reverse that trend and support emerging artists. After seeing my daughter struggle financially during her final year of fine art studies, I realised others might not be as fortunate. This award is my way of giving back and supporting the incredible new generation of ceramicists.
