Keeping your cashmere looking and feeling luxurious takes just a bit of gentle care. Here’s our step-by-step guide to washing and maintaining your Jumper 1234 cashmere, and cashmere wool blend pieces.
Step 1: Hand Wash
Hand washing is the gentlest way to clean cashmere. Fill a basin or sink with cool water, and add about a tablespoon of non-bio washing liquid. Opt for a detergent with glycerin and a low pH value, such as a cashmere-specific detergent or even baby shampoo. Remember, lighter colours need a little less detergent, while darker colours may require a bit more.
Note: You don’t need to wash your cashmere after every wear. Typically, once every two or three wears is enough, however it depends on your personal preference.
Step 2: Rinse and Repeat
Gently place your jumper or cardigan in the cool, soapy water. Turning your cashmere inside out before hand washing helps protect the outer surface from friction, preserving colours and minimising wear on its delicate fibres, so your clothes stay fresher for longer.
Allow it to soak for around five minutes. Then, gently roll and squeeze the cashmere to remove suds. For a thorough rinse, transfer it to fresh water, ideally in a larger basin or tub, and let it soak for a few more minutes. Then repeat, gently roll and squeeze the cashmere to drain the clean water.
Step 3: Air Dry
For best results, air-dry your cashmere, using this four step method:
- Lay the cashmere flat on a towel.
- Starting from the end closest to you, roll up the towel with the cashmere inside to gently press out excess water.
- Unroll and place the cashmere flat on a dry towel, reshaping as you lay it out.
- Allow your cashmere to air-dry completely in its natural shape, which usually takes around 24 hours.
Step 4: Store with Care
Ideally cashmere should be folded, not hung, to maintain its shape. Store your pieces in a dark, ideally airtight spot to prevent fading. Cedar chips and dried lavender are natural deterrents for moths and can help keep your cashmere fresh. Check out our
guide to protecting your cashmere from moths.
Tips for Removing Pills
Day-to-day wear can cause pilling, which is totally normal with natural fibres. Here’s how to safely remove pills:
- Use a cashmere comb with teeth between 1/4 - 5/8 inches long.
- Comb in short strokes in one direction, holding the comb at a 15-degree angle to the fabric.
- Turn your cashmere inside out to de-pill the interior, if needed.
Extra Cashmere Care Tips
Remember, cashmere is super soft and luxurious because it'a delicate. Try to avoid excessive friction while wearing or cleaning it to minimise pilling. Over time, the fibres will naturally grow softer and adapt to you.
